Congress leaders take out rally, held in Gujarat

first_imgMore than 250 Congress leaders, including legislators, were detained on Tuesday when they held a sit-in and tried to take out a march towards the Assembly to press their demand of loan waiver. The Congress held a farmers’ rally in the State capital on the first day of two-day Assembly session.State Congress president Amit Chavda and Gujarat Congress in-charge Rajiv Satav who led the farmers’ rally were detained outside the secretariat complex when they tried to enter the complex towards the Assembly.The opposition party workers and farmers were engaged in scuffle with policemen in which two policemen and as many Congress workers received minor injuries.The police tried to prevent their march stating that permission was not granted by the administration to hold the rally.The Opposition party has been mounting pressure on the State government to waive ₹ 65,000 crore farm loans in order to help thousands of farmers who are distressed due to poor monsoon and lower prices.Meanwhile, ruling BJP leaders hit out at the opposition party for their attempt to disturb the law and order situation. Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani said the Congress had never cared for farmers when it was in power for decades.“Instead of asking the BJP government to waive debts, the Congress should talk about what it did for farmers when it was in power,” Mr. Vaghani said.last_img
