Barcelona manager Luis Enrique urges fans to help launch another comeback against Juventus

first_imgBarcelona manager Luis Enrique urged the club’s fans to create a wild atmosphere in Camp Nou to help the team complete another improbable comeback in the Champions League, this time against Juventus. (Neymar confident of leading FC Barcelona to second miracle comeback)The Spanish coach insisted his team will try to score five goals on Wednesday night against the visiting Italians, who have a 3-0 lead from the quarter-final first leg in Turin. After Barcelona overturned a 4-0 deficit against PSG in the last 16 in the biggest comeback in Champions League history, Luis Enrique believes supporters can play their part as the team tries to obtain another shock result.”If we score the first goal, the second will be scored by Camp Nou and the third will come by itself,” he said in a news conference on Tuesday.”Our objective is to score five goals. (We have to) attack, attack, attack. And when we relax a little bit, we have to start attacking again.”A handful of fans left with Barcelona 3-1 up against PSG on March 8, missing the stunning finale as Barca netted three goals in the last few minutes to knock their opponents out of the competition.Luis Enrique said they should stay until the end this time, with the team planning to fight until the final whistle to turn the game around.”I hope they don’t go in the 80th minute. We will try right until the end,” he said.”Those who experienced the night against PSG at Camp Nou will have another chance to enjoy an historic evening. Right until the 95th minute we have to be united.”advertisementThe coach confirmed that Javier Mascherano would be back from injury for the game and said he was happy to have Sergio Busquets available after the defensive midfielder missed the first leg.”Getting (Busquets) back is always great news,” he said.”He is one of the most tactically intelligent players there is and a key man for us. The more he can do, the better for us.”Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta said the team needed to put in its best performance of the season.”We have to play a perfect match. We have to create the maximum number of chances and score goals. We probably need to play our best match of the season,” he said.last_img read more

Monaco beat Saint-Etienne to lift first French league title in 17 years

first_imgOn the night Monaco clinched its first French league title for 17 years, it was fitting that rising star Kylian Mbappe scored a superb goal. The teenager, who has taken just six months to become one of Europe’s most sought-after players, scored the opener in a 2-0 win over Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.Mbappe scored his 15th league goal this season with his first chance of the game after Saint-Etienne midfielder Jordan Veretout gave the ball away near the halfway line. The 18-year-old striker was set up by Falcao’s through ball and rounded goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier with a feigned shot at full speed before finishing from a tight angle.Substitute Valere Germain completed the win in added time. With one match left to play this weekend, Monaco has an unassailable six-point lead over second-place Paris Saint-Germain, the defending champions.Despite losing to Juventus in the Champions League semifinals, Monaco has thrilled Europe with its attacking football, scoring 155 goals in all competitions and reaching 104 in the league, two more than PSG’s league tally last year.Only RC Paris (118) and Stade de Reims (109) have scored more, during the 1959-60 season.Led by the strike duo of Radamel Falcao and Mbappe, Monaco averaged nearly three goals per game this season to end PSG’s four-year dominance.Unbeaten in the league in 2017, Monaco has also scored in its last 31 league games, a new record during a single season.”Monaco waited 17 years for this title, this is exceptional, a true source of pride,” Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said. “We played in the second division four years ago. I did not believe we would achieve this in such a short period. We will do everything we can to keep our players.”advertisementKeeping Mbappe in the Principality might be a tall order, though. The youngest player in French league history to reach 10 goals in a season, he has scored 26 goals in all competitions, won a place in the France team and been named as the French league’s best young player. He is reportedly courted by both Real Madrid and Manchester United. On Wednesday, Monaco lacked its usual flair and pace in the rearranged fixture against Saint-Etienne despite an early pressure on Ruffier’s goal.Hampered by the absence of many injured players including captain Loic Perrin, Saint-Etienne opted for caution but was caught on the break after 20 minutes.Falcao came close to doubling Monaco’s lead 10 minutes after Mbappe broke the deadlock but his shot was blocked by a last-ditch challenge from Florentin Pogba. The second half lacked intensity as Saint-Etienne seemed resigned to its fate, despite a good effort from Veretout that was intercepted by Monaco defender Kamil Glik near the hour mark.Germain then played a nice one-two with Mbappe at the end of a stylish team move but missed an easy chance from close range after connecting with a superb cross delivered by his teammate.Germain made amends in added time, scoring from Thomas Lemar’s assist. The referee’s final whistle prompted scenes of jubilation at the Stade Louis II, with Germain and Andrea Raggi mingling with supporters bare chested in the stands as coach Leonardo Jardim shed tears of joy.Only Saint-Etienne (10) and Marseille (9) have won more league titles than Monaco in France.last_img read more

PSL spot-fixing row: Dean Jones, Mohammad Yousuf to stand as witnesses for Sharjeel Khan

first_imgSuspended Pakistan batsman Sharjeel Khan’s lawyer has revealed that Islamabad United’s coach Dean Jones and former Test cricketers Mohammad Yousuf and Sadiq Mohammad will be presented as ‘expert witnesses’ on May 24 in front of the Anti-Corruption Tribunal probing the Pakistan Super League (PSL) spot-fixing scandal. On the third day of the day-to-day hearing on Thursday, Sharjeel’s lawyer Shaigan Ijaz accused the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for making up a story and trying to back it up with witnesses.”PCB made up a story and is trying to back it up with witnesses. Board is being lenient with some players, while it is acting strictly against others,” the Express Tribune quoted Shaigan as saying.Meanwhile, PCB’s attorney Tafazzul Rizvi said that Sharjeel’s lawyer has full right to disagree with their witnesses, adding that the truth would reveal once the decision comes out.The Shaharyar Khan-led board presented International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-corruption Unit chief Ronnie Flanagan as witness who clarified that the world’s cricket governing body has nothing to do with the case.”This is PCB’s case to deal with. The case is being heard professionally and it shows that PCB wants to eliminate corruption from the game of cricket,” Flanagan said.On Wednesday, Sharjeel’s counsel said that his client had timely informed the relevant authority of the PCB about his meeting with a bookie.Earlier on March 6, a three-member tribunal was formed by the PCB to investigate the spot-fixing case allegedly involving Sharjeel and Khalid Latif. The duo was suspended by the PCB under its Anti-Corruption Code, as part of an ongoing investigation into an international syndicate which was believed to corrupt the second edition of the PSL.advertisementBoth the cricketers, who play for Islamabad United franchise in the PSL, formally recorded their statements on February 18 before the anti-corruption unit of the cricket board. The British Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the case including Nasir Jamshed, who was released on bail.last_img read more

South African batsmen Quinton de Kock (55 innings) and Hashim Amla (57 innings) are 1 and 2 respectively.India lost a bit of the initiative though when Virat Kohli fell for his first duck in almost three years. Yuvraj Singh, man-of-the-match on Sunday, then perished for 7 as India stuttered to 179/3 in 33.3 overs.Immediately after, there was a huge LBW appeal against MS Dhoni and Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews even asked for a review. But TV replays showed the ball pitched outside the leg-stump and there was some relief in the Indian camp.Dhawan, meanwhile, waited patiently at the other end, watching a bit of a mayhem. Kohli and Yuvraj were gone within 40 runs of each other and that certainly meant Sri Lanka had regained some momentum. But Dhawan is an experienced campaigner and he has a special affinity with England the Champions Trophy. It was here in 2013, during the same tournament that Dhawan had hammered two successive centuries, against South Africa and West Indies, announcing himself as a long-term opener for Team India.advertisementEarlier in the day, Dhawan and Rohit had brought up their 10th 100+ opening stand, the fifth most in ODI history. Spanish prosecutor files tax fraud lawsuit against Cristiano Ronaldo

first_imgFootball star Cristiano Ronaldo faces a lawsuit filed on Tuesday by Spain’s prosecutor’s office in Madrid for allegedly defrauding Spanish tax authorities of 14.7 million euros ($16.48 million) between 2011 and 2014.The prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the Real Madrid forward had knowingly used a business structure created in 2010 to allegedly hide his image rights income in Spain. This involved a “voluntary” failure to comply with his tax obligations in Spain, the statement from the office’s economic crimes section said. The four counts of tax fraud were based on a report from Spain’s tax agency, it said.Real Madrid declined to comment and calls to the agency representing Ronaldo, Gestifute, went unanswered.Ronaldo, who led Real Madrid to their 12th European Cup earlier this month, is the latest in a long line of soccer players in Spain – among them Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Neymar – who have been caught up in cases over tax or transfers.Between 2005 and 2010, foreign players in Spain were protected under the so-called “Beckham law” allowing them to curb their taxes. But as the financial crisis bit deeper, that exemption was lifted, paving the way for the cases. The prosecutor’s office alleges that Ronaldo had defrauded the tax authorities of 1.4 million euros in 2011, 1.7 million euros in 2012, 3.2 million euros in 2013 and 8.5 million euros in 2014.Ronaldo, who is from Portugal, became a Spanish tax resident in January 2010 and in November 2011 opted to follow the Spanish tax regime that applies to foreigners working in Spain, the statement said.He should have paid a tax rate of 24 percent in 2011, and 24.75 percent in the three following years, it said.advertisementIMAGE RIGHTSThe prosecutor said that after Ronaldo signed a contract to join Real Madrid in December 2008 he ceded his image rights to a company called Tollin Associates Ltd, domiciled in the British Virgin Islands and in which he was the only stakeholder.Tollin Associates then ceded his image rights to a company in Ireland called Multisports&Image Management Ltd which was responsible for managing them. Tollin Associates itself had no business activity, the statement said.”Ceding image rights to (Tollin Associates) was completely unnecessary and it’s only purpose was to create a screen to conceal the totality of his image rights income from the Spanish tax authorities,” the statement said. The prosecutor’s office filed the lawsuit against Ronaldo on Tuesday to a court in the Madrid district of Pozuelo de Alarcon.Ronaldo finished the soccer season scoring two goals in a 4-1 victory over Juventus in the Champions League final to become the tournament’s top scorer with a total of 12 goals.Afterwards, Spanish sports newspaper Marca called Real Madrid, who also won La Liga this year, “masters of the universe”.In May, Spain’s Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Messi and stood by a Catalan regional court’s 21-month prison sentence for defrauding authorities of 4.1 million euros on image rights. He is unlikely to go to prison as under Spanish law sentences under two years can be served under probation.Spain’s High Court in May cleared Neymar of fraud but he still faces a corruption trial in Spain in connection with the value of his 2013 transfer from Santos to Barcelona. He has denied wrongdoing.last_img read more

New humanoid robot sweats during exercise

first_imgTokyo, Jan 2 (PTI) Scientists have developed a new humanoid robot that can perform exercises like sit-ups and push-ups, and even sweat, just like humans. The robot has an artificial perspiration system and anatomically resembles the musculoskeletal intricacy of a human boy.Developed by scientists at the University of Tokyo in Japan, the robot called Kengoro can be used as crash test dummies, and to design muscle analytics for athletes and sports. The team has been developing humanoid robots for several years now. Kengoro is the most advanced iteration of a series that began in 2001 with a bot named Kenta, New Atlas reported. Its most interesting development is the artificial perspiration system, according to a study published in the journal Science Robotics. The system not only mimics the way human beings sweat, but also prevents overheating of the robot by running water through its skeletal frame and allowing steam to vent out of small outlets.Kengoro can execute a series of human-like movements resembling a tough exercise workout, including push-ups and sit-ups. Revealed: Royal Enfield’s brand new parallel twin engine

first_imgOver the past few months, the internet has been buzzing with activity relating to the new generation motorcycles expected from Royal Enfield. A lot was speculated and a large part of that revolved around the engines which would power these new bikes. All of that has been put to rest as the company has revealed its brand new 650cc parallel twin motor. First and foremost, this is no upgrade from an existing engine. It is a brand new engine designed from the ground up. It displaces 650cc and churns out 47bhp@7,000rpm and 53Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. It sports an 8-valve SOHC configuration and is air cooled. The engine gets a six-speed gearbox as well as a slip-assist clutch which is expected to reduce lever effort.  Royal Enfield says that this motor will allow riders to experience the ‘ton’ with ease and this means that the new engines will allow the new motorcycle to cruise effortlessly on highways worldwide.  Another aspect which identifies any Royal Enfield is the ‘thump’ which the existing range of engines emanates. But this new motor will not have a similar engine note. However this new motor will offer a rorty engine note which will suite the character of the bike it will power.  Other important bits include a larger alternator which is ready to power all the accessories which will be offered for the new bikes. So which are the bikes which this motor will power? Royal Enfield is all set to reveal two brand new bikes at EICMA 2017 in Milan shortly and both these bikes will get this engine. The new bikes are currently in pre-production stage and will go on sale April 2018 onwards. The 350cc and 500cc motors will continue to serve the existing range of Royal Enfield bikes.advertisementlast_img read more

Baseball – Spring is Near!

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares CLEARWATER, FL— Newly trim Ryan Howard singled in his first two at-bats of spring training, and the Philadelphia Phillies tied the New York Yankees 5-5 Wednesday in their spring training opener. On a warm, sun-splashed day on the west side of Tampa Bay, the scoreboard said it was 92 degrees at game time — perhaps 10 degrees more than the actual temperature but a contrast to the cold, snowy winter in the northeast.Trying to regain the form that made him one of the top hitters before he tore his left Achilles tendon injury during the 2011 playoffs, Howard hit an opposite-field single to left in the second inning and lined a single to right in the fourth. He’s standing up straighter at the plate and dropping his hands.“Looked at some old video and stuff,” he said. “Back in ’06, I was way down and then it looked like I was steadily creeping up over the years.”Howard lost 15-20 pounds since November, when he started on a diet to eliminate sugars. His listed weight had been 250.“You have a cheat day or whatever every once in a while,” he said, “but for the most part, just trying to stick with it.”The Yankees’ Aaron Judge, a 2013 first-round draft pick, hit a tying, three-run homer on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in a four-run ninth off Mario Hollands.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Kevin Slowey, in camp with a minor league contract, is to start for the Phillies against the Yankees on Wednesday in Tampa. Slowey hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since he was released by the Miami Marlins last June with a 5.30 ERA and 53 hits allowed in 37 1-3 innings.Yankees: RHP Nathan Eovaldi, a teammate of Slowey’s on the Marlins, is to start Wednesday against the Phillies. New York obtained Eovaldi, outfielder Garrett Jones and minor league pitcher Domingo German from Miami in December for Martin Prado and pitcher David Phelps.TRAINER’S ROOMYankees: Minor league C Luis Torrens has a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will miss the season. Dr. David Altchek is to operate Wednesday.Phillies: RHP Aaron Harang was scheduled to start Wednesday but his name was missing when the pitching schedule was posted in the Phillies clubhouse. Harang said he was dealing with “maintenance” issues. Harang said he saw a chiropractor and that is normal for him in spring training. He expects to pitch Monday.STARTING TIMEYankees: RHP Adam Warren allowed one hit in two innings. He felt constrained by the new clock timing 2 minutes, 25 seconds for breaks between half innings. The final warmup pitch must be thrown with 30 seconds left. “I couldn’t believe it. How am I going to get eight pitches in a minute, 50 seconds.”Phillies: RHP David Buchanan started in place of Jerome Williams and gave up one run and five hits in two innings. He allowed the Yankees to score in the first on consecutive two-out singles by Chris Young, Jones and Jose Pirela — one of New York’s second base candidates. Bullpen coach Rod Nichols informed Buchanan of the start at breakfast. “I was eating some oatmeal and Rod came up to me and said, ‘Hey, you’re throwing first today,’” Buchanan recalled. “I try to throw strikes, keep the ball on the ground. Unfortunately they found holes today.”RONALD BLUM, AP Sports Writerlast_img read more
