ICC Champions Trophy: Shikhar Dhawan continues love affair with England, slams 10th hundred

first_imgShikhar Dhawan smashed his 10th ODI hundred as India took command against Sri Lanka in their Group B encounter on Thursday at The Oval. Thanks to an injury, Dhawan had been out of international cricket after the Cuttack ODI vs England but he came back to the team with a bang against Pakistan in their Champions Trophy opener on Sunday, hammering a 65-ball 68.The moment @SDhawan25 hit ??!??? #INDvSL #CT17 pic.twitter.com/1ED3JQ9Id0- ICC (@ICC) June 8, 2017Once again on Thursday, Dhawan turned on the heat with some scintillating stroke play after playing second fiddle to the more aggressive Rohit Sharma, whose 78 gave India a strong platform.Dhawan, in fact, became the third quickest to reach 10 ODI hundreds, taking just 77 innings to get there. South African batsmen Quinton de Kock (55 innings) and Hashim Amla (57 innings) are 1 and 2 respectively.India lost a bit of the initiative though when Virat Kohli fell for his first duck in almost three years. Yuvraj Singh, man-of-the-match on Sunday, then perished for 7 as India stuttered to 179/3 in 33.3 overs.Immediately after, there was a huge LBW appeal against MS Dhoni and Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews even asked for a review. But TV replays showed the ball pitched outside the leg-stump and there was some relief in the Indian camp.Dhawan, meanwhile, waited patiently at the other end, watching a bit of a mayhem. Kohli and Yuvraj were gone within 40 runs of each other and that certainly meant Sri Lanka had regained some momentum. But Dhawan is an experienced campaigner and he has a special affinity with England the Champions Trophy. It was here in 2013, during the same tournament that Dhawan had hammered two successive centuries, against South Africa and West Indies, announcing himself as a long-term opener for Team India.advertisementEarlier in the day, Dhawan and Rohit had brought up their 10th 100+ opening stand, the fifth most in ODI history. Four of those century-opening stands have come in seven Champions Trophy matches.Dhawan’s mind-numbing innings came to an end in the 45th over when he fell to Lasith Malinga for a 128-ball 125. Most 100s in ICC Champions Trophy: 3 Shikhar Dhawan (7 innings)3 Herschelle Gibbs (10)3 Sourav Ganguly (11)3 Chris Gayle (17)Fastest to 10 ODI hundreds:Quinton de Kock (55 innings)Hashim Amla (57)Shikhar Dhawan (77)last_img read more
